Hi, I’m Kerry Longrigg. Presently I work for Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale PCT as a senior 1 podiatrist, having two main clinical roles.

Firstly, I organise the biomechanical assessment clinics and oversee the provision of orthoses for the podiatry department. During my post I have facilitated the development of dedicated biomechanics clinics for the orthopaedic consultants, staff training programmes and an interest group within our trust.

Secondly, I work with the rheumatology MDT as a specialist podiatrist, at Burnley General Hospital. During my early days in this post, I quickly realised that my knowledge of patients with rheumatic diseases needed to be improved if I was to develop an effective podiatry service for this patient group and input into the team. Consequently, I joined the PRCA and BHPR and enrolled on the MSc in Clinical Practice at Salford University. I am now coming to the end of my dissertation that has been focused on the provision of NHS foot care to patients with rheumatic diseases in trusts across the North West region of England.

My work within rheumatology has opened up many opportunities for both personal and professional development. Over the past two years I have been involved in the North West region Clinical Effectiveness Group that has developed guidelines and referral pathways for the management of patients with rheumatic diseases.

In 2002, I volunteered to present the guidelines at the SOCAP conference and following on from this I am speaking at the EULAR conference in Lisbon (June 2003). As some of you know, I’m now a committee member for the PRCA and hope to have plenty of input from an NHS clinician’s perspective.
